Introduction of a new universal payment slip (TUP)

The Association des Banques et Banquiers Luxembourg (ABBL) and its members, with the active support of Victor Buck Services, are introducing a new TUP slip from 2 June 2025.

Still 1.2 million TUP transfer orders per year

In Luxembourg, thousands of companies, businesses and institutions collect invoices or payments for subscriptions, hundreds of associations receive donations, and families and friends transfer sums of money. None of this would be possible without secure and efficient banking and payment services.

While almost all of these transfers are now made using cards, direct debits or credit transfers, the majority of which are initiated via digital channels such as online banking, in Luxembourg around 1.2 million transfers are still initiated each year using direct debits. These are still used because they are straightforward – in particular due to the fact that a certain amount of data is often pre-filled – or for people who are less at ease with online banking.

Easier processing thanks to better-structured information

To facilitate the processing of transfers via TUP, the banks and payment service providers (PSPs) that are members of the ABBL, supported by Victor Buck Services, have worked to adapt the TUP slip. The information it contains will now be better structured, making processing more efficient and more secure. Another new feature from 9 October 2025 is that users will also be able to indicate whether they want their transfer to be treated as an instant payment once it has been processed by their bank.

The new ISO20022-compliant TUPs will be introduced from 2 June 2025, and will be used in parallel with the old slips in circulation. The short version will no longer be supported after this date. From 1 January 2026, only the new TUPs will continue to be accepted.

Retail customers will receive new TUPs from their bank or payment service provider. Business customers, public authorities and organisations are invited to contact their printer as soon as possible, or to download the data and instructions for producing the new postal payment slips from the ABBL website.
